Algeria

Map showing Algeria

Location: North Africa, bordering Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya and Tunisia, with Mediterranean Sea coastline

Capital city: Algiers

Population: 40 million

People: 99 percent Arab-Berber, less than 1 percent European

Religion: 99 percent Muslim, 1 percent Christian and Jewish

Point of interest: Algeria is the largest African country and the tenth largest country in the world.

Christianity: Algeria is one of the most exciting Arab countries for church growth. There are an estimated 70,000 believers, mostly of Kabyle (Berber) background.

Mission work: There is little or no missionary presence in Algeria today, but the church is maturing and flourishing.

Prayer requests:

  1. Pray that many would be drawn to our Arabic and Kabyle ministry websites. Pray that our content would be stimulating and relevant to Algerians seeking the truth.
  2. Pray that the people of Algeria would become disillusioned with Islam and more open to Christianity through watching Christian programmes on satellite TV. Pray that they would have courage to make contact with believers inside or outside the country and that they would feel able to ask questions.
  3. The biggest obstacle to finding Christ is fear. Because community ties are strong, not many are willing to risk being cut off from their family and friends. Pray that a desire to know Jesus would drive out fear. Pray that whole families would be saved or that new communities would form so that all believers would have the fellowship and friendship they need.
  4. While the Kabyle church has experienced huge growth in numbers, there are few Arab believers. This is perhaps because the Arabs of Algeria have stronger ties to Islam than the Kabyles. Pray that these ties would be loosened. Pray for more Arabs to respond to the gospel and for strong Arabic churches to form and grow.
