Religion: 74 percent Sunni Muslim, 16 percent other Muslim (including Alawite, Druze) 10 percent Christian, plus tiny Jewish communities

Point of interest: Syria’s capital, Damascus, is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.

Christianity: Syria has a large minority of indigenous Christians. There are a few known believers from a Muslim background.

Mission work: Civil unrest has halted mission work, though some are trying to help refugees in neighbouring countries.

Prayer requests:

  1. Pray that fighting and violence between government forces and the opposition would cease. Pray for positive dialogue between these two groups and for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
  2. Pray for Syria’s minority Christians who have justifiably grown fearful since the unrest began. Under the governance of President Assad they received protection, but with the strong probability of his removal, the future is uncertain. If/when Assad is removed, Syria could become another Iraq, which has lost thousands of its Christian population due to persecution.
  3. Pray for the thousands of refugees who have fled to Syria’s neighbouring countries. Pray that they would have their needs met. Pray that while away from Syria, many refugees would hear the truth and have their lives transformed by the Holy Spirit.
  4. Pray also for those who remain in Syria – that in the midst of so much upheaval many would seek refuge in the God who sent his Son to die in their place.
