For Shia Muslims, Ashura marks the martyrdom of Hussein, the grandson of their prophet, Muhammad. Hussein was killed in 680AD in a battle that took place in modern-day Iraq.
Ashura is a day of mourning, where many take part in processions, beating and flogging themselves to express their grief.
Worldwide, between 100 and 200 million Shia Muslims will be commemorating Ashura today. Please pray particularly for this group as they focus today on suffering. Pray that the name of Jesus, who suffered and died for all mankind, would be known and remembered by many Shia Muslims. Pray that his resurrection would bring hope and life to all who hear this good and wonderful news!
