You may recall that our March edition of Breakthrough highlighted the country of Egypt. While the recent news headlines may be disturbing, we remember that prayer changes things and the world’s news services don’t often share the spiritual perspective of events.
In 2010 when I visited Egypt I met an Egyptian Coptic Christian and had the pleasure of spending three days with her. During our time together in this pre-revolutionary period, Irene shared with me that she and her husband had applied for immigration to a western nation. They were worried about the Islamicization of Egypt and they didn’t want their children, then 8 and 10 years old, to be raised in an Islamic nation. When I asked if she prayed or shared Christ with her Muslim neighbours, she gave me a puzzled look and said that although she was always kind, she would never go out of her way to have a conversation with a Muslim and that she wasn’t sure how to pray for them.
After I left Egypt and returned to my Middle Eastern country of assignment, I thought about Irene and her family a lot. Throughout the whole of the Arab Spring in 2011, they were on my heart and although I wrote some emails, I never received a response. I wondered if they’d successfully immigrated to the western country they longed to live in.
In 2013 I had an opportunity to visit Egypt again and was thrilled to spend a day with Irene. When I asked about their application to emigrate elsewhere, with great enthusiasm she replied “Leave Egypt? We are definitely not leaving Egypt! This is where God is at work and we want to be a part of what He is doing”! Irene went on to tell me how the Coptic and Evangelical Christians – Christians of all denominations – were regularly meeting together in large groups and praying for their land. Never in Irene’s lifetime had she seen the Christians coming together like she sees now. Since the revolution of 2011, Irene has been attending several churches and with tears in her eyes, she told me that all the pastors had the same message – this is God’s time for Egypt. Now Irene has a new dream – to win a Muslim to Christ.
One year later when I wrote to Irene (March 2014) and asked ‘How can we pray for you?’ she requested that we pray for the women who have lost husbands, brothers and sons in the ongoing upheaval. She assured me they are getting stronger, in Him. As this current video on Egypt echoes, Irene and many Egyptian Christians are filled with new hope for their land. Please continue to pray for Egypt.
